Avoid tooth loss through early detection!

If periodontitis remains untreated, it leads to gum recession, tooth loosening and ultimately tooth loss.

Scientific studies show that today around 90% of all people over the age of 30 suffer from various forms of gum inflammation (periodontitis). Most of them are not even aware of their condition, because the dangerous thing is that the inflammation is usually completely painless and therefore goes unrecognized. Discomfort and pain only become apparent in the final stage, when the affected teeth lose their hold, become loose and fall out or have to be removed. Many people do not know that periodontitis can be transmitted through kissing, for example. Periodontitis is an infectious disease.

Signs and symptoms of gum disease

Monitoring your gum health and visiting a dentist could make the difference between moderate treatment and gum surgery.
Signs and symptoms to look out for and seek dental advice are as follows:

  • Bleeding gums when you floss or brush your teeth
  • Tooth mobility
  • Space that has recently formed between the teeth and is increasing
  • Swollen and sensitive gums
  • Receding gums that make the teeth appear longer
  • Pus between the teeth
  • Sore spots in the mouth
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Changes in how you grit your teeth

The initial, reversible inflammation of the gums (gingivitis) can be stopped with timely treatment, e.g. through professional teeth cleaning (PZR). Otherwise, particularly aggressive bacteria will gradually attack the periodontium and spread through the gum pockets towards the tooth bone. Periodontitis develops, which leads to bone loss. The chances of recovery depend on the extent to which the jawbone has already been damaged.

Prevention - Prevention

Gingivitis and periodontitis are not fatal diseases. Semi-annual professional Teeth cleaning  as well as annual check-ups at the dentist, good oral hygiene and a healthy diet are the best protection against periodontitis.

FAQ

How does periodontitis develop?

If plaque, which forms a clear film over the teeth and gums, remains on the tooth surface over a longer period of time due to incorrect or inadequate oral hygiene, gingivitis (inflammation of the gums) initially occurs. Gingivitis is limited exclusively to the gums (gingiva). It is the mildest form of gum disease and the precursor to more complex problems.

The aim of periodontitis therapy (gum treatment) is to reduce the number of bacteria to a minimum and contain the infection. To begin with, perfect oral hygiene must be established. Using modern dentistry, we can gently and painlessly remove the so-called biofilm, which contains the bacteria, from the deep gum pockets. Once the surface of the tooth root has been cleaned and smoothed, the gums and bone can regenerate. In some particularly aggressive cases, it may also be useful to determine the type of bacteria and combat them specifically with antibiotics.

Periodontitis can be controlled by the therapy and can come to a standstill so that the patient's own teeth can be preserved for life. Gum recession can be improved by plastic corrections.

Whether dental implants are suitable for you is influenced by various factors, including tobacco consumption and general illnesses such as diabetes. Your oral hygiene plays a very important role, as it has a direct impact on the condition of your gums. Gum disease (periodontitis) can lead to bone loss and make bone augmentation necessary.

"Your implant can last a lifetime by participating in our prophylaxis program every six months in up to 98%!"

Good oral hygiene and regular prophylaxis can successfully prevent serious inflammation of the implant site (peri-implantitis).
